figurative drawings

This body of work is based on feminine contours, both young and old.  I choose the female form because it is the one with which I am most familiar.  But especially the women I draw originate from my self-portraits, and the animals I draw are my own pets.  Thus I always begin with my own symbols and my knowledge of life.

I choose to draw the figure because to me the face and body posture reveal emotion.  The figure gazes down, or the head is tilted in order to open the inner self to the outside world.  Her placement is vital, as is her relationship to her surroundings.  I combine my symbols, such as the furniture (stability), with her presence in order to capture her sense of belonging and her expression of life. She is contained within a series of circular shapes so that she is complete and anchored. The backgrounds are solid to make her secure. The figures are drawn in pencil because I can feel the contact of the pencil and the paper more intimately than I can with paint.  I feel in control, and thus the women come alive.

The symbols and figures are independent, yet they interact in order to reveal a message.  I want the viewer to see the introspection of the female.  Her thoughts show what her life has been and what is important to her.  She reveals her inner self that is most often hidden, the aspect of her true self exposed only to those who seek to understand.
